IN THE LIFE OF A TREE

In the 1970s a group of people with a desire to live and farm communally purchase the land that the tree is on. Eventually this land will become part of the Evergreen Land Trust. The people living on this land, known as the River Farm, are practicing organic farming and sustainable forestry there today.

In the summer of 2000 Andrew Vallee and Wesley Smith harvest the tree that is now one hundred and eighteen years old. The tree yields 1700 board-feet of lumber, all of which Smith and Vallee are using to create forty unique pieces of furniture and sculpture.

The story of this tree's life will be presented at the Whatcom Museum of History & Art in Bellingham, Washington beginning on April 21, 2002.
